Malkolm Boothroyd isn't like any other 11th grader. After finishing 10th grade in 2007, Malkolm decided to take a journey. The journey was to be a 10,000 mile long, fossil-fuel-free cycling trip from Alaska, down the West Coast, and along the southern US. It was a journey to observe birds, but, to do it in a clean, environmentally sound way. The journey would serve other purposes of course, to have fun (first), to raise funds for worthwhile bird conservation programs (through pledges during the long trip), and to promote fossil-fuel-free transportation, especially within the birding community.
On June 21, 2007, Malkolm and his parents, Wendy and Ken, headed south from the Yukon on their bikes. A year later, they had cycled a total of 13,133 miles and tallied 548 bird species, but possibly even more impressive, they had raised a whopping $23,768 towards bird conservation projects! These bird conservation projects include initiatives in the Arctic, Central America, and North America.
SalvaNATURA is grateful to receive a $3,000 bird-a-thon donation from the efforts of Malkolm and his family. The funds will support the bird-monitoring efforts of SalvaNATURA and its committment to long-term studies of resident and migratory bird species in El Salvador.

Once again, from SalvaNATURA, thank you Malkolm, Wendy, and Ken, for creating such a great project, promoting bird conservation in El Salvador, and inspiring all of us to make the world a better place...through action.
